A Federal Mandate to Bring Down National Fuel Consumption

A Federal Mandate to Bring Down National Fuel Consumption

Fuel ConsumptionAutomakers and the associated service industries such as the auto shipping industry are gearing up to re-strategize themselves in the wake of a federal mandate to bring down the country’s fuel demand over a period of time.

Furthermore, Petrochemical engineers and automotive technologists are sharpening their focus on developing new gas-saving technologies. Car transporting services need to adapt themselves in order to embrace the new technologies as they become available, and participate in this long-term effort to improve general fuel economy of the nation. We can all chip in!

New Fuel Economy Goals

Targets of the new fuel economy require auto manufacturers to almost double the mileage of an average passenger vehicle to 54.5 mpg by 2025. Clearly, stringent fuel efficiency standards will also apply to auto transport companies and other service providers that consume significant amounts of fuel in the economy. Automakers and vehicle transport companies and other industries have only 13 years left to achieve these stringent fuel efficiency targets on the roads. There may be some changes to these rules though based on politics. Many Americans are tired of seeing jobs and opportunities being snuffed out because of irrational environmental regulations. Regardless though, auto designers do have to make their engines more fuel efficient just to compete with others in the market.

However, a number of automotive industry analysts are sceptical about the actual achievement of such tough fuel efficiency targets set forth by the government. It is certainly not going to be an easy task to transform America’s penchant for gas guzzlers into a liking for smaller, more efficient vehicles that perform less work and have less power than what gas engines can provide. At the same time, for the car manufacturers, it is going to be a herculean task to come up with extraordinary automotive innovations in order to produce highly fuel-efficient vehicles without compromising on safety, performance, and cost.

Auto Part Innovations

Vehicle hauling companies will also have to re-evaluate their existing shipping processes and strategies in order to economize their fuel consumption. The shipping trailers and trucks used by the auto carriers will be required to incorporate the new automotive technologies. Shipping methodologies and processes will have to become more innovative and collaborative in order to achieve superior fuel economy standards. The auto manufacturers are already exploring various options to enhance fuel economies for the future.

Some of the advanced automotive plants on the Gulf Coast and elsewhere are producing light-weight plastic alternatives to the existing steel-based auto parts that are very heavy. This can be a significant way to reduce the overall weight of a vehicle, and thereby cut down its energy requirements to propel itself down the road. If the technologists succeed in integration of multiple steel auto parts into a single plastic component, it can bring down the weight of the vehicle by as much as 50%.

Everyone Saves & Wins

However, challenges will still remain on how to deliver such technologies in a cost-effective manner. The cost of the vehicle as well as cost of services such as moving vehicle from one state to another will be impacted due to high investments in new technologies. If the costs of running a vehicle are reduced, it can offset the investment costs of auto makers and auto shipping companies, and eventually lead to benefits for the consumers as well as the environment.
